Autumn 2019 recent openings


Autumn 2019 saw the opening of a number of major dining and shopping complexes - Shibuya Scramble Square, Shibuya Parco, Coredo Muromachi Terrace, and Grandberry Park among them - along with many independent restaurant openings. Here are a few of the season's new restaurant and bar openings.

Restaurants

Spice Today - Thai: Mitsukoshimae
Open 11am-10:30pm (LO) daily.
Spice Today's lunch menu is served until 4:30pm and covers a wider range than your typical green curries and Pad Thai noodles. For Y1100 you can choose two main dishes along with jasmine rice, soup and a nice green salad; there are several noodle options as well.

Main dishes change regularly, with tempting options like Stir-fried Pork with Chinese Water Spinach; Isan-style Fried Chicken; Stir-fried Shrimp Curry; and Ga Pao (minced chicken with Thai basil). There's a somewhat bigger menu at dinnertime, along with a wine list (from Y3000/bottle) and cocktails. A couple of craft beers designed to go with Thai food - Sudachi White and Grassy Spicy IPA - are available if you're feeling adventurous....

Tsurutontan - Udon: Shibuya

Tsurutontan offers nearly fifty kinds of udon, including enticing cream-based seafood bowls and several types of curry udon. The wide-ranging menu also includes sushi rolls, horsemeat sashimi, tempura and numerous seasonal side dishes.

šNgon Ngon #2 - Vietnamese: Asakusabashi

A branch of Takadanobaba's best banh mi specialist, Ngon Ngon #2 also offers several types of pho. More unusual for Tokyo, they produce a version of a Hanoi dish called Bun Dau Mam Tom - a pungent fermented shrimp paste served with noodles, fried tofu, pork belly and intestines, and vegetables, for Y1100. Most dishes other than pho bowls are ready for take-out.

Panda Express - American: Machida

The second Tokyo branch of the US shopping-mall favorite serves American-Chinese dishes like Orange Chicken (their signature dish), Mongolian Pork, Kung Pao Chicken and Egg Rolls. The "Big Plate" combo (Y1144) comes with three main dishes plus a base of Fried Rice, Chow Mein, white rice and/or steamed vegetables. Smaller combo plates are also available, and you can order any of the main dishes a la carte as take out.

Jikasei Mensho - Ramen: Shibuya
Open 11am-11pm (LO) daily.
This branch of the aggressively innovative ramen chain Mensho, located in Parco's Chaos Kitchen area, serves quinoa noodles, wagyu beef ramen and spicy wagyu tantanmen. Ramen is served in tall, cup-ramen-like bowls, and the shop's music program is put together by a well-known DJ.

Carvaan - Middle Eastern: Shibuya

This Saitama-based restaurant serves exotic Middle Eastern fare like Arabian Roasted Lamb; Egyptian Grilled Chicken and Mulkhiya Soup with Cumin Rice; and Zoroaster Curry with Chicken, Persian Spices, and Basmati Rice. The diverse wine list includes bottles from Lebanon, Georgia, Moldova, Greece, Turkey and Armenia....

Deli Fu Cious - Seafood: Shibuya

Fish and seafood burgers are the unusual specialty of the house at deli fu cious, with intriguing offerings like shrimp-fritter burgers, crab-cream croquettes, conger-eel hotdogs and tuna cheeseburgers. Most main items are priced between Y1100 and Y1500.

Yellow Marks - Cafe: Shibuya

Souffle omelettes and souffle crepes are two of the original egg-based dishes served at this egg-themed cafe. There's also a diverse selection of drinks - "handmade" hot and cold juice-based beverages, cold-brew coffee, flavored cold-brew coffees and various cocktails.

Gochiton - Japanese: Otemachi

Tonjiru - pork miso soup - is the main dish here and it's very tasty soup indeed. Packed with tofu and fresh vegetables (carrots, daikon, onions and leeks), it's got a pleasantly creamy consistency and wonderful depth of flavor.

Soups start at Y640 a la carte or Y890 for a teishoku (soup plus rice, pickles and a small salad), and you can add in ingredients like egg, natto, pork spareribs and keema curry, or upgrade to fancier types of miso....

Sobakichi - Kushiage: Mitsukoshimae

While this is ostensibly a soba shop, most evening visitors are here for the deep-fried kushiage skewers, served with sake, shochu or beer. Skewers come in a nice range of both seafood and vegetable ingredients, and with prices starting at just Y120 they can be hard to resist....

Bars, cafes

Sarutahiko - Coffee shop: Mitsukoshimae
Open 10am-9pm daily.
There's finally a gourmet coffee spot in the Mitsukoshimae area with the opening of Ebisu's popular Sarutahiko Coffee in Coredo Muromachi Terrace. They serve both drip coffee and espresso beverages, along with coffee beans to go.

Schmatz Beer Stand - Beer bar: Machida
Open 10am-7:45pm (LO; Fri-Sun -8:45pm) daily.
The half dozen or so German-style craft beers on tap at Schmatz are probably the most interesting brews you'll find in the Grandberry Park shopping mall. This mini-branch of the popular German chain, located in the middle of the "Gathering Market" food hall area, serves an abbreviated menu of German sausages and hot dogs, beef and pork burgers, and beer, wine, cocktails and soft drinks. Beers start at Y600 and hot dogs are Y750.

Beer Boy - Beer bar: Shibuya
Open 11am-11:30pm daily.
Run by the Craft Beer Market chain, Beer Boy is a rather basic standing bar serving ten taps of craft beer and a simple food menu. The taps are roughly split between more commonly found, budget-friendly domestic craft beers and higher-priced "special" beers. The former category is priced at Y480/Y780 for small and large sizes, and there's a small table charge as well....

Craft Company - Beer bar: Akebonobashi
Open 11:30am-2, 5-11:30pm. Closed Mondays, 4th Tuesday.
This neighborhood craft-beer bar serves mostly imported beers on draft from twelve taps, along with a "bistro-style" food menu of small dishes. Beers are relatively exotic and diverse - on a recent visit we found brews from Edge Brewing (Spain), Saltaire, Anarchy Brew and Twisted Barrel Ale (UK), Malheur (Belgium) and Georgetown Brewing (Washington State)....

Schmatz Shibuya Parco - German: Shibuya
Open 11am-11pm daily.
This branch of the very popular German bar-restaurant offers a full menu of sausages, schnitzel, risotti and pizzas. The seven taps dispense original German-style craft beers and German imports, priced from Y650 a glass, and three-part tasting flights are Y1100. If you can't get a seat here, the next nearest branch of Schmatz is around three minutes away.

Mirai Sake - Sake bar: Shibuya

Kubota sake from Niigata is the specialty at this mostly-standing sake bar in the Parco "Chaos Kitchen" basement restaurant floor. There are also around seventy or eighty other sake choices, a good number of them with attractively designed labels. Sake starts at Y500 a shot, and there's a light food menu.

Craft Beer Server Land - Beer bar: Akasaka

This is the second branch of a popular bar known for their wide selection of both reasonably priced craft beers (they have 31 taps) and bar snacks. Beers start at Y550, with a Y380 table charge.
