It all began in 2004, when the first cat cafe opened its doors in Osaka. In Tokyo the fad reached its peak around 2010, with well over a dozen feline-staffed shops opening in that year alone.

After removing your shoes and washing your hands, you can relax or play with the cats and kittens while you have your drink. Prices are reasonable, and the rules are simple: no flash photos, no grabbing tails or waking sleeping kitties.

Other animal cafes - featuring rabbits, owls, lizards and other cuddly and not-so-cuddly creatures - follow similar general procedures, although each shop will have its own set of rules.
