Sun: Open Sundays

Run by the highly regarded Ise Kadoya brewery in Mie Prefecture, this Marunouchi izakaya serves regional cuisine and craft sake from Mie as well as their own craft beers. Ten varieties of Ise Kadoya beer are available on tap.

As with any good izakaya, the the food menu is designed to accompany drinks, and the grilled meats and fish here go especially well with both beer and sake. One particular highlight is the Ise buri no kama yaki - a nicely grilled "helmet" (jaw meat) cut of yellowtail. Miso-grilled Ise Akadori chicken is also very good - no surprise as Ise Kadoya has been producing excellent miso for more than a century.

Other grilled choices are pork, lobster, and steaks made from Mie's famous premium-grade Matsusaka beef. The rest of the menu follows a typical izakaya pattern - raw items (sashimi of the day), fried items (oysters, octopus karaage, minced Matsusaka beef fritters), and starchy rice and noodle-based dishes to wind up the meal (udon, chazuke, maki-zushi).

One unusual category is the big selection of oden simmered in an Ise miso-based broth. There are also sake-friendly snacks like tofu with Aosa seaweed and potato salad with dried fish and crunchy takuan pickles.

The well-curated sake list changes daily and covers a dozen sakes from Mie and a handful from other sake-producing regions, with multiple selections from some breweries. Sake-based fruit liqueurs include Hokosugi yuzu nigori-zake from Mie, and peach, mikan and strawberry varieties from Tochigi brewer Hououbiden. There are also sours and other cocktails, and six or seven types of shochu.

Among the ten Ise Kadoya beers on tap are limited-edition seasonal beers like Smoked Oyster Stout, and Neko Nihiki ("Two Cats"), an excellent hazy New England IPA created in collaboration with Oregon's Culmination Brewing.

Budget around Y4,000-5,000 for food and drink at dinnertime, or maybe a bit more if you spring for the Matsusaka beef.
