Yokohama's beloved curry shop Marumasara more than lives up to its stellar reputation, serving some of the best spice curry we've ever eaten. Curry plates are artfully presented, and the spacious dining area looks like a cross between a chic cafe and someone's atelier. A recording of chirping cicadas playing in the background adds to the charming atmosphere.
The calligraphic menu can be challenging to fully decipher, but basically they serve one main curry every day, veering towards experimental choices on weekends. In addition to the main curry there are helpings of keema and dal, colorful pickles lined up on the rice, and maybe a smidgen of fruit jam, plus whatever optional toppings and add-ons you've ordered.
The keema is fantastic - deeply, richly spiced with a meaty punch to it. All the curries are on the mild side rather than fiery, and less salty than average, to better appreciate the subtle mix of spices they incorporate.
One add-on that you shouldn't miss is the grilled lamb chop. It's juicy, tender, and thickly coated with an inspired mix of spices that serve to intensify the flavor of the meat. Going for lamb overload we also enjoyed a terrific mutton curry side dish on our platter, and it nicely complemented the pork vindaloo that was the daily special.
Our lassi also ranked well above average, topped with crushed nuts and presented like something you might find in a fancy cocktail bar. Other drinks include Key lime soda, chai (hot or iced), rum chai, and craft beers.
