Yuyay serves very satisfying Peruvian food and drink in an unpretentious bistro-style setting. The menu covers the bases, from ceviches and causa mashed-potato salads to traditional grilled brochettes and roast meats.

The ceviches here are bracingly tart and quite refreshing. You can choose from whitefish, mixed seafood, Carretillero (incorporating fried squid), and "Boom" - an extra-spicy version that merits three red pepper marks on the menu. There are other seafood starters as well - mussels, octopus in olive sauce, and Tiradito, a Japanese-influenced dish of sashimi-style raw fish marinated in a spicy sauce.

Roast pork with fried rice is a hearty main dish, as are the sauteed lamb chops and the grilled sea bream with quinoa risotto. Grilled skewers of beef rump steak, pork belly and beef hearts are good non-seafood starters or snacks to accompany your drinks.

Whatever you order, don't miss trying out some of Yuyay's home-made sauces. They range from spicy mint and red-pepper to olive cream sauce. Our hands-down favorite is the Chimichurri, made with chopped parsley and lots and lots of garlic. The sauce dishes are small and inexpensive, so you can try out a few different ones.

The drinks list offers some nice Peruvian wines by the glass or bottle and a full page of Pisco-based cocktails. Chicha Morada, a soft drink made with purple corn, is among the non-alcoholic options, along with Inca Kola and Shikuwasa Soda.

Budget around Y5,000-6,000 for dinner with drinks, or Y2,000 for one of the lunch specials. Party menus with open-bar plans are available for festive get-togethers.
