A branch of a San Francisco "California Italian" restaurant, A16 Yokohama serves magnificent pizzas and a good selection of antipasti and pastas. The international wine list offers more than sixty wines by the bottle, with both California and Italian vineyards well represented. And when the weather cooperates, the waterfront terrace is a great place to sit and watch the boats go by.
Ten pizzas range from simple Marinara and Margherita to more toppings-heavy pies like Patate (potato, prosciutto cotto, mozzarella, grana padano, oregano, arugula and garlic). The Salsiccia is made with fennel sausage, Kujo Negi (a tasty green onion from Kyoto), mozzarella, grana padano, garlic and chili - a mix of flavors and textures that work together beautifully.
If you want more than just pizza, you can begin with fancy starters like Hazelnut Fritto with Calabrian Chili Pepper and Pork Liver Terrine and Prune Pickles. The Carpaccio in Pistachio Sauce is made from fish freshly caught on the nearby Miura Peninsula. The pasta selection features some exotic (at least to us) noodles like Troccoli, Casarecce and Paccheri.
Lunchtime prix-fixe menus are available, or you can order a la carte any time of the day. Wines by the glass start at around Y1,000, and bottles start at around Y5,000.
