Tapas, pintxos snacks and paellas are served with Old World wines and Spanish sherries at Bar Espanol Picar. The six-part tapas platter provides a good mix of flavors to accompany your first glass of wine. It's big enough to share but not too big to enjoy all by yourself. The liver mousse is worth ordering on its own - it comes in a hefty portion studded with raisins and complemented by crisp bread.
Iberico Pork Smoky Paella makes a dramatic entrance in a cloud of smoke, with chunks of tender meat and firmly textured rice - relatively small in size but big in flavor. Other popular dishes include Lamb Morunos skewers; Spicy Roast Daisen Chicken; and Stewed Iberico Pork Spareribs.
Wines start at around Y850, with ten wines (including three sherries) poured by the glass. The bottled list is much larger, with more than two dozen red wines alone, from various regions of Spain, Italy and France. Non-alcoholic sparkling wine from Belgium is Y1,000 for a small bottle.
The lunchtime menu offers a mini paella served alongside a pot of bubbling-hot ajillo and a small salad. You can choose from three different paellas and three different varieties of ajillo, with hot coffee afterwards.
The compact dining area is casual but stylish, with notably comfortable seating. Budget Y4,000-6,000 for food and drink at dinnertime; lunch is priced Y1,300-1,800.
