It's breakfast time all day long at this famous New York-based restaurant. Eggs galore, fluffy French toast and dessert-style pancakes are the main attractions, though you'll also find hefty meal-size salads, burgers and grilled-cheese sandwiches.
One especially artful construction is the lavish "Signature Avocado Toast," with mashed avocado, fresh cherry tomatoes, burrata and greens, with optional toppings of poached egg and smoked salmon. It's seasoned with a thick sprinkling of Egyptian-style dukkah, an enticing blend of toasted nuts (pistachios), herbs and spices that brings out the full flavors of the ingredients.
Among the numerous egg-based offerings are a hearty Farmer's Omelette - stuffed with ham, potatoes and leeks - and a high-protein Spinach and Goat Cheese Omelette made with only egg whites. The "Half and Half Eggs Benedict" comes with dual toppings of ham and smoked salmon (the latter of which is also called Eggs Royale). Rocket and other accompanying greens are nicely seasoned and come in ample portions.
The American diner classic Mac 'n' Cheese is made here with gruyere, studded with bits of bacon and topped with a crunchy layer of parmesan. It's relatively mild in flavor but well balanced, and it pairs well with a side of baby leaf salad. A supplementary order of bacon would also not go amiss.
Sarabeth's pancake platters seem to be a popular choice for afternoon dessert breaks. They are rich and eggy in flavor, and come with a good-sized portion of fresh fruit. A more standard dessert choice is the creme brulee, prepared with an extra-creamy consistency and a hard, thick layer of crunchy topping.
The drinks list offers fancy fruit concoctions like "Orange Julep" (orange juice, milk, honey, vanilla) and the smoothie-like "Four Flowers" (banana, orange, pomegranate, pineapple).
There are brunch-friendly cocktails like the very spicy Bloody Mary (garnished with shredded peppers), and a handful of wines by the glass. If you ask about the seasonal teas you'll be presented with a fairly big tea list, which includes several caffeine-free herbal tisanes.
The dining room is a bright and cheerful cafe-style setup, with a lively daytime atmosphere. Sarabeth's is conveniently located just an escalator ride away from the busy South Gate of JR Shinjuku Station.
(Note that Shinjuku is the only Japan branch of Sarabeth's to serve a full breakfast menu in the evening instead of a dinner menu.)
