Yakitori skewers made from premium heirloom-breed chicken are served alongside creative side dishes at this very casual izakaya. You can choose from around 14 wines by the glass, 15 kinds of sake, and a similar range of fruit-based Japanese gin "sours", all at budget-friendly prices. Seating is on high stools at the wrap-around counter, and ordering is via QR code.
Some highlights here are the very tender ume-shiso chicken breast; plump chunks of chicken liver in sauce; and small but intensely flavored wings. Caramelized liver pate is prepared with a blowtorch, resulting in a thick, crunchy glazed layer like creme brulee, with a subtly sweet flavor. Deep-fried daikon radish makes a scrumptious salty snack to go with drinks, and might make you wonder why daikon isn't prepared this way more often.
Wings, thigh meat and similar items are grilled with a decent amount of charring for flavor, while the excellent chicken breast, liver and many other items are served fairly rare. (We loved it all, but if you prefer all your chicken parts to be well done you might want to go elsewhere.)
You can peruse the paper-based Japanese menu while you order from the online (partially English) menu, accessible from your phone. There's an illustrated chart explaining the various cuts of chicken that they serve, which is handy because several of the names are different from those used in Tokyo. For easier ordering there are also a few different prix-fixe options, which include both skewers and small side dishes.
