Bite-sized gyoza, one of Fukuoka's best-loved local dishes, has been the specialty at Hountei since they first opened their doors in 1949. Popular dishes include crunchy yaki-gyoza dumplings, Berkshire pork gyoza, steamed gyoza in soup, wontons in soup, and wontons in soup with ramen noodles.
Set teishoku lunches, served until 5pm, come with a plate of gyoza of your choice plus chicken karaage, soup, pickles and rice. Compared to other shops the dumplings here seem to have a distinctively meaty flavor, perhaps with less emphasis on supporting ingredients like diced cabbage.
The menu offers beer and shochu cocktails as well as numerous side dishes if you want to make a night of it. The decor is cheap and cheerful, with lots of individual counter spaces as well as tables for pairs and groups. Prices are hard to beat, with a standard ten-piece serving going for just Y600.
