Tanakaya (Mejiro - Liquor shop). 3953-8888
This spacious basement shop near Mejiro station is one of the best liquor shops in town. It's certainly number one when it comes to its selection of American microbrew beers, with dozens and dozens of brews that we haven't found anywhere else. They also stock an impressive choice of Japanese micros and Belgian craft beers, sake and awamori, Calvados and liqueurs and plenty more. Cash only.

Jip (Shinjuku Gyoen-mae - Wine bar). 6380-1178
If you've ever wanted to try Japanese wines, but don't want to gamble with buying completely unknown bottles, Jip Bar is the place to check out. This specialty wine bistro pours from a rotating list of twenty Japanese wines by the glass at any given time.

This small neighborhood shop stocks a good selection of wines from around the world, sold at very reasonable prices.

Part of the Foodshow complex below Shibuya Station, this shop specializes in imported foods and liquors and offers a pretty wide selection.

Wine Market Party (Ebisu - Liquor shop). 5424-2580
Mostly French wines, with some rare bottles you won't find elsewhere in town. Be prepared to pay, though. There are several different caves, with prices going up the farther in you go. In front they also sell cheeses, imported foods and party supplies and wine accessories.

Imported foods from around the world, including cheeses, spices, and canned and packaged goods. There's also a big stock of mostly European wines. Prices vary from great bargains to inexplicably expensive, so shop carefully.

National Azabu (Hiroo - Retail). 3442-3181
One of the best of the international supermarkets, with the widest range of imported foods in Tokyo (along with Nissin in Azabu-Juban). You'll find good selections of wines, cold cuts and imported cheeses, muesli and other breakfast cereals, canned soups, cake mixes, candies and many other European and North American products. They deliver within about a 20-minute radius of the store.

Meat is Nissin's strong point, with over a dozen types of cold cuts, a cornucopia of sausages, and unusual items like pheasant, rabbit, and even kangaroo meat. And the third-floor wine shop is worth a visit in its own right - particularly for its wide choice of Australian and California wines in the under-Y2000 price range.

The little tasting room in the back of this well-stocked liquor store is a good place to wind up a shopping afternoon or start off an evening in Ginza or Marunouchi. To accompany your wine, there are six different cheeses and other wine-friendly foods like pate, smoked duck and chicken pastrami.

Fujinokuni Yamanashi-kan (Nihonbashi - Antenna shop). 3241-3776
Yamanashi is Japan's most productive winemaking region, and you'll find a good selection of local wines at this prefectural antenna shop, along with specialty food products such as fruit jams and juices. Depending on the season they might offer fresh garlic and grapes, pork sausages and jerky, peach and grape juices, umeboshi, and several types of local craft beer.

Half wine shop, half European-import grocery store, Euroseed stocks an eclectic range of jams and preserves, candies and coffee beans, olives and salsa, and lots more on its crowded shelves. Sale prices are often a few hundred yen lower than other import shops in town.

A good collection of hard-to-find sakes, plus many German wines. They also hold sake tasting classes (in Japanese).

National Den-en (Denenchofu - Retail). 3721-4161
This sister of the temporarily shuttered international supermarket National Azabu offers a similarly diverse selection of imported foods and wines. Despite their suburban location (midway between Denenchofu and Jiyugaoka stations), they deliver within most of the central-Tokyo area that was served by National Azabu.
