A leftover from the days before Nishi-Ikebukuro went relatively upscale. Delicious curries and ambitiously tacky decor. On weekends there's a good lunch buffet.

A conveniently located Thai spot with pleasant decor and good prices.

One of Tokyo's original Thai restaurants, it hasn't improved with age.

Nishi-Shinjuku -- Peach Fair (Plik Chee Fa). 3362-7005
Authentic Thai dishes like raw shrimp with garlic and chili; Thai sausage; and various types of okoge. Lunch from Y750, set-price dinner Y5900 for two. They advertise themselves as a "Thai government official restaurant." [See FULL REVIEW.]

Nishi-Shinjuku -- Mango Tree Cafe. 6380-2535
The dining room is pleasantly decorated and the food here is very well prepared - including some excellent grilled chicken - but the dinner menu is too small and limited to get excited about. Lunch is a better bet, with a Y1600 buffet. Dinner averages around Y2500 without drinks.

A cozy little neighborhood place with a limited menu of Thai standards, nicely prepared but adapted to Japanese tastes. Portions are on the small side.

Traditional Thai and Laotian cuisine; Cay also doubles as a nightclub and performance space.

This branch of the ubiquitous budget Thai chain has a larger-than-average menu, good food and take-out service. The decor is also a cut above average.

A branch of the famous 24-hour-a-day Yokohama Chaothai; they have an extensive menu of both standards and unusual dishes.

Very authentic flavors and atmosphere - it's almost like being in Bangkok, and sometimes there's even a tuk-tuk parked outside.

Standard Thai fare in pleasant surroundings; there are a few California wines as well as the usual Thai beer. Desserts are above average.

A stylishly decorated restaurant in a converted two-story house. The food is spicy and authentic, with plenty of original dishes to show off the chef's talents. There's a nice selection of Australian/California wines to go with the food. Reservations recommended. No smoking 6-9pm.

They occupy very spacious quarters atop the Roi Building in central Roppongi, with great nighttime views. And the food isn't bad, either.

The popular lunchtime buffet is Y1800 and offers a nice selection of Thai classics and original dishes. There's also a cafe-style menu all through the afternoon with stir-fries, noodles and Thai salads. The decor is simple and utilitarian, with baskets under each seat where you can stow your gear while you eat.

The limited menu here focuses on noodle and rice dishes, plus a lot of stir-fried vegetable items. It's good for a cheap, quick bowl of noodles at lunchtime; reservations are advised if you go in the evening.

A small neighborhood joint (it would be hard to find if you didn't stumble across it) with about a dozen seats and authentic Thai food. They serve good curries and some unusual regional Thai dishes; they also offer Thai cooking classes.

There are several Thai restaurants in the neighborhood, but this sprawling shop stands out for its comfortably laid-back, ethnic-cafe atmosphere. There's a menu of Thai standards along with plenty of desserts and exotic drinks, all at very reasonable prices.

Nakai -- Sawadee. 3361-4832
The little old Thai grandmother who runs this place serves real down-home cooking with a lot of character (and plenty of spice). The menu covers around 45 or 50 mostly standard home-style dishes, with only a few curries. The fried fish dishes are especially recommended - skillfully prepared with crunchy skin, tender meat and captivating sauces. The unpretentious dining space is on the second floor of an old building right next to the railroad tracks, with three or four tables and non-stop Thai music videos playing in the background.
