Wine Bars
This section is produced with the assistance of
Riedel Japan.
In addition to wine bars, this section also includes selected restaurants with strong wine lists, and cafes and other places with a number of wines by the glass.
A friendly, comfortable cafe with great coffee, excellent baked goods from Kyle's in Nakano, and bagels with lox. They also have plenty of special events during the week, including live music and go lessons. The art on the walls changes every two weeks. [feedback] Takadanobaba 1-29-21. Open 11am-11pm daily.
Marugo (Shinjuku - Wine bar). 3350-4605 Choose from about fifteen wines by the glass or bottle, or pick a Latour or Mouton from the back and put it on your expense account. France is amply represented, with biodynamic wines comprising nearly half of the choices on the frequently changing list. [See FULL REVIEW.] [feedback] Shinjuku 3-7-5. Open 5pm-2am daily.

Bisty's (Harajuku - Wine bar). 5771-4466 This unusual wine bar and retail shop offers more than 80 wines by the glass - mostly French, but with a good selection from elsewhere around the world. Wines come in three different tasting sizes (20ml, 50ml, 90ml), with prices averaging Y300-700 for the 50ml size. A new-fangled nitrogen dispenser system keeps the wines fresh, and automatically dispenses your selected wine when you insert a prepaid card. (Cards are sold in various denominations.) The chef here trained in France and New York, and his food menu ranges from simple small-plate dishes (in the Y500-1000 range) to full meals; at lunchtime you'll find mostly sandwiches. [feedback] Jingumae 4-12-4, Omotesando Hills B3F. Open 11am-10pm (LO) daily.
Fujimamas (Harajuku - Asian fusion). 5485-2283 Adventurous, fun-loving fusion cooking with a nice mix of European and Asian ingredients (like their chicken, asparagus and lemongrass risotto, Y900). The atmosphere is comfortable and very casual, and the upstairs tatami rooms are delightful. The drinks menu includes Red Hook, Chimay and Bintan beers, assorted tropical-style cocktails, and well selected California and Washington wines. [feedback]
The smart interior here is a very Tokyo-exotic mix of baked-mud walls, heavy wooden furniture, and organic-looking extra-terrestrial lighting fixtures like something from the set of "Alien". But you're really here for the wine - over 100 different varieties, from all regions of Australia and New Zealand. [See FULL REVIEW.] [feedback] Shibuya 2-9-11, Aoyama City Bldg. B1F. Open 6pm-2am. Closed Sundays.
Beacon (Omotesando - Steak house). 6418-0077 This swank dining spot from chef David Chiddo (Cicada, TY Harbor) bills itself as an "urban chop house" - basically a steak house, but with more seafood choices. The kitchen uses only top-class ingredients - long-grain-fed Angus beef, wild Aussie jumbo prawns, organic Scottish salmon - and the menu offers good value for money (budget around Y8500 for dinner and drinks). The wine list focuses on smaller New World vineyards, with some 20 choices by the glass. [feedback] Shibuya 1-2-5. Open 11:30am-3, 6-10pm (LO) daily.

Open noon-2:30, 6-9:30pm (LO). Closed Wednesdays.
One of the strangest interiors of a Tokyo bar - in addition to the counter area there are several cozy, semi-private sculpted fiberglass "cocoons" fitting 2-4 people. The wines are mainly French, but there are also wines from Chile, Argentina, California, Australia and Italy. Just one winemaker is chosen per country, but with several selections from each vineyard. The limited food menu is designed to bring out the best of the wines, and the duck confit (Y2000) and gongonzola penne (Y1100) are good choices. Wines start at around Y3000; Y500 service charge. No smoking in the cocoon area. [feedback] Kamiyamacho 40-3, B1F. Open 6pm-2am (3am weekends) daily.

The Buri group run a couple of popular standup sake bars (Buchi in Shibuya, Buri in Ebisu), and now they've opened a standup French bistrot, with similarly inexpensive food and 100 different wines. [See FULL REVIEW.] [feedback] Shibuya 1-10-12, Miyagi Bldg 2F. Open 5pm-3am daily.

Solid, self-assured new American cuisine and an inspired selection of 40 California wines in an exuberantly urban setting. The culinary influences are more European than Asian, and memorable past dishes have included rack of lamb with dried fig sauce, enticing okra-shrimp spring rolls, and huge, succulent scallop appetizers. The venue is small but plush, with terra-cotta-colored walls and distinctive wall murals, open-beam ceilings and a beautiful glass-fronted walk-in wine cellar. Mains average Y2000, starters Y1000, and wines start at Y3500, with even premium labels very nicely priced. [feedback] Ebisu 4-23-7, 2F. Open 11:30am-2, 5:30-10pm (LO). Closed Mondays.
C'zon (Ebisu - International). 5728-4552 This comfortable, luxuriously spacious restaurant is designed around a "Napa Valley" theme and offers a big list of Napa wines. The food is first-rate international cuisine, and while many other wine-oriented restaurants in town focus heavily on the higher-priced bottles, C'zon offers a big selection of wines in the Y3000-6000 range as well as more expensive choices. (No smoking in the main dining room.) [See FULL REVIEW.] [feedback] Ebisu-Nishi 2-10-10, Elegante Vita Nacora 2F. Open 11:30am-midnight daily.

Although they're not our favorite oyster bar in Tokyo, Grand Central does offer an impressively big selection of oysters from all over. There's also a large, varied wine list (heavy on the whites, naturally), with lots of choices by the glass, in case you feel like just dropping in for a drink at the bar. [feedback] Konan 2-18-1, Atre Shinagawa 4F. Open 11am-11pm (LO) daily.
If Shinagawa Atre were a hotel this would be the "lobby lounge" - definitely not the place for a discreet rendezvous. They're worth noting for their big wine selection - two dozen different choices at Y500/glass, thanks to a high-tech wine dispenser system. There are plenty of original light dishes to nibble on, including tasty smoked salmon sushi rolls and an excellent free-range chicken salad. [feedback] Konan 2-18-1, Atre Shinagawa 4F. Vinoteca (Roppongi - Italian). 5647-8301 The dramatic entrance to this spacious wine bar takes you through a tunnel of wine, with bottles displayed behind plexiglass panels on the ceiling, walls and floor. "French barbecue" is the specialty here - basically kushiyaki with French names.
