Well-prepared Cantonese standards are served here in a very ordinary-looking Chinese-restaurant dining room. The Y2100 weekend lunch features good-sized portions of shrimp in chili sauce, sweet and sour pork, stir-fried vegetables, smoked-meat starters, egg-drop soup, and almond jelly for dessert - no real surprises, but everything is nicely put together. Weekday lunches start at Y1050, with full-course dinners from Y4200.

The dim sum here is fairly average, but there's a lot of it! Some 51 varieties, including 14 desserts, and all you can eat at lunchtime and all day weekends. The decor is modern and attractive, and non-smoking seats are provided. Y3200 at lunchtime, but tea is extra (from Y800); Y3800 for weekend dinners. There's also a regular menu, and late-night hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

The showpiece at this dim sum specialist is a colorful platter of eight different xiao long bao (shoronpo), representing exotic flavors like foie gras, truffles, cheese and Szechuan pepper. You can also choose from a menu of typical Chinese delicacies, or a simple bowl of noodles if that's all you want. Don't be put off by the rather plain noodle-shop decor on the ground floor - the basement dining area is quite a bit fancier.

Some of our memorable discoveries have included the meaty and garlicky gyoza dumplings and the tasty and beautifully textured spring rolls. The results are quite tasty and varied in flavor - it's amazing just what you can do with mushrooms, wheat gluten, nuts, lotus root and other vegetables. It's just a tiny counter with nine stools, a TV set on the wall, a friendly mama-san, and shockingly cheap prices.
